FOOD & NUTRITION BLOG
National Nutrition Month is here!!
In my opinion, every month should be focused on nutrition because healthy eating and living is part of your daily life! BUT, since us nutritionists and dietitians have a dedicated month that we are arguably allowed to spew nutrition information at our family, friends and random strangers on the streets with no retribution, I’m not complaining.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t handle stress well. I get overwhelmed quickly, develop anxiety because I can’t finish everything on my to-do list, and get irritated and cranky when someone tells me to relax. (True story, someone told me to relax and I got more upset). I toss and turn in bed thinking about the cause of my stress and lose my appetite, while simultaneously developing a penchant for eating unhealthy food.
Whether this describes you to a T or you have experienced one or two of the above, you have undoubtedly been under a good deal of stress. If you’ve ever strolled into Union Square, you might have thought that you landed in some kind of mall food court. And you wouldn’t be too far off.
Union Square has its assortment of well-known vendors- Taco Bell, Panda Express etc- as well as their own self-branded stores- Bricks Pizza, 360 Grill, and In the Mix. In a sea of unhealthy fast food, are there even any healthy options available?? So many of us are fixated on weight. You've probably heard one of these scenarios:
My new years resolution is to lose weight I need to lose x pounds to fit in this dress/bikini/suit etc He/she will only accept me/like me if I become skinny and attractive I don’t care if I’m fat. If people don’t like me, then it’s their problem. How many cups of coffee do you drink per day? Two? Three? Perhaps more than is socially acceptable?
It’s okay, I won’t judge. For those of you who haven’t heard the exciting news… there is a new gluten free station at the DC!!! Wait… what?? Yes, it’s true. Go check it out for yourself.
One of the four corners of the DC has been transformed into this beautiful station to cater to students with gluten sensitivities. To those who eat gluten free, this is a godsend. No more having to ask, “Is this gluten free?” or “Is there wheat in that?” Just when you think you’re fine and dandy and ready to take on the new school semester, guess what? You’re hit with the annual influenza, AKA the winter cold. Now instead of being at the top of your game, you’re sick in bed or suffering through class with a headache, sore throat, a fuzzy mind, and a mountain of snot-filled, virus-y, tissues that piles up and spills over to your classmates side of the table (don’t pretend you don’t see them subtly inching away from you or using some scrap piece of paper to swat your tissues back to your side). Personally, I wouldn’t blame them. They’re just trying to not get sick in the best possible way when they find out they’re sitting next to a contagious classmate.
So you're here because you're either curious about nutrition or have no clue what nutrition is or you were just clicking around the Spartan Shops page and you just landed here by accident. In any of those cases, welcome! Stay, read, chat, drink a cup of tea with me (or your favorite beverage of choice).
