FOOD & NUTRITION BLOG
I often have friends come and ask me for nutrition advice once I tell them I am a nutrition major. Most people usually have an idea about what they would like to improve in their lives, whether it be weight loss, building muscle, or eating healthier on a busy schedule. Despite a great idea, without proper goal setting, most people don’t realize they set sail on a sinking ship. Then the discouragement sets in and people give up.
But it certainly doesn’t have to be this way! I’m going to show you a real simple acronym that can help you set goals called SMART goals. Here’s the breakdown:

Welcome back to Fall semester, Spartans! It is the beginning of a new school year and no doubt you are busy and up to your neck in work and errands. One thing I always want to stress for students and for busy people, in general, is to make sure to never skip breakfast. It is one of those sayings that you have heard a million and one times over, yet it is so easy to dismiss.
If you’ve been paying close attention, you would have noticed that my last couple posts were all geared towards finals week. I’ll link them here in case you haven’t read them or would like to read them again:
We live in a society of disordered sleepers. In fact, students are among the worst abusers of their bodies when it comes to sleep. We stay up late to cram for exams or just stay up late for no good reason. We have conditioned ourselves to be nocturnal when all our body really wants to do is get to bed at a decent hour!
Just a couple weeks ago, one of my good friends told me she was going to detox because she had a bad diet week. She felt bloated and uncomfortable. Her detox diet regimen: No meat, no sweets, just water and fruits and veggies. While I cringe...
I’m not very good at remembering names. In fact, you may introduce yourself to me and two seconds later, I’ll forget it. If your name is particularly complicated... let’s just be real here, there’s maybe a 0.01% chance I’ll remember it.
Thanks to some creative minds in the public health sector, catchy slogans like, “I <3 Tap Water” from UC Berkeley, “Take Back the Tap,” and “Think Outside the Bottle” are common phrases used to describe the movement toward tap water and reusable water bottles over wasteful bottled water.
Welcome back, everyone! I hope you all had a pleasant and fun Spring Break!
I recently was invited to attend a great event at the DC set up by our sustainability and marketing team (shoutout to Kristen and Daniel!) called, “Nutrition University,” to promote awareness about National Nutrition Month. At one of the stations, we had a silhouette of a bodybuilder where we had students write in a pledge to be healthier for the month. During my downtime, I glanced over and started perusing through what students wrote and one of them just didn’t make sense to me. It read, “This month I pledge to gainzz.” In college, it will, for most of you, be your first extended time away from home. What does this mean? This means you don’t get mom and dad’s home cooking. It will probably be one of the saddest moments you will ever experience in your life (especially if you moved far away from home) when you crave home cooked food when you're homesick or just had a bad day. Or... perhaps, it is a liberating experience if your parents made you suffer through some pretty bad tasting food for the majority of your life. Hey, there are all sorts of families.
“Eat like your ancestors and reap the health benefits!” That’s the basic concept of the Paleo (short for Paleolithic) diet. Does it actually work or are supporters just blowing smoke?
