FOOD & NUTRITION BLOG
The holidays are officially upon us! And that, unfortunately, also means that finals are also creeping up on us. I wrote an entire blog post about healthy study snacks and memory boosting foods that you can read HERE and HERE, respectively. But, instead of talking about studying and finals, let’s talk about something we’re all interested in: drinking! I’m not a huge fan of drinking myself, but a mixed drink or two (especially during the holidays), can really hit the spot sometimes! However, drinking must be responsible and done for the right intentions. In addition, did you know that alcohol has nutrition guidelines? Yep, there is such a thing that exists that tells you about what one serving size of alcohol is and how many you are allotted per day. According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, women should only have 1 drink per day while men should only have no more than 2 drinks per day. Generally, anything more than that amount can lead to a slew of health problems such as rapid weight gain or “beer belly,” high blood pressure, liver cirrhosis, and some forms of cancer. What does one serving of alcohol look like? Here's the breakdown:
And if you are curious to how many calories popular drinks have, take a look below before making your next drink selection: Combined with a healthy diet and a robust exercise regimen, indulging in a moderate amount of drinks per day can have some health benefits such as a lower risk of heart disease for middle-age to older adults. However, purposefully drinking until you're drunk is going to leave you feeling miserable the morning after and you won’t be in the right state to do anything.
I will forever be an advocate for healthy beverages (water!), but if you do decide to drink, make sure to drink responsibly. Enjoy the holidays, Spartans and best of luck with finals!
